(25) Jacob was left alone. And a figurewrestled with him until the break of dawn. (26) When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he wrenched Jacob’s hip at its socket, so that the socket of his hip was strained as he wrestled with him. (27) Then he said, “Let me go, for dawn is breaking.” But he answered, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.” (28) Said the other, “What is your name?” He replied, “Jacob.” (29) Said he, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with beings divine and human, and have prevailed.” (30) Jacob asked, “Pray tell me your name.” But he said, “You must not ask my name!” And he took leave of him there. (31) So Jacob named the place Peniel, meaning, “I have seen a divine being face to face, yet my life has been preserved.” |

“Jacob was left alone…”
A favorite midrash of mine comes from an unlikely source, the TV show “The West Wing”. Leo tells this parable to a colleague in trouble:
“This guy’s walking down a street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can’t get out. A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, “Hey you! Can you help me out?” The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole, and moves on. Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, “Father, I’m down in this hole; can you help me out?” The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by. “Hey, Joe, it’s me. Can ya help me out?” And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, “Are ya stupid? Now we’re both down here.” The friend says, “Yeah, but I’ve been down here before and I know the way out.”
What does it mean to be alone? Sometimes, I think in our worst moments, we feel as if no one could possibly understand us or our circumstances, no one knows our pain or what we’re going through, and that we have to resolve our problems ourselves. Certainly, that is what much modern thinking would teach us: you made this mess, and now you have to clean it up. And to a certain degree, that’s true; we always remain somewhat mysterious to one another. And to be sure, we have an obligation to take responsibility for our words and behaviors as best as we can.
But when we focus so much on our alone-ness, when we isolate ourselves, then we deny our friends, our family and community the opportunity to care for us, to support us, to help us share the load. We deny ourselves the opportunity to be lifted up out of our circumstances.
We are told at the beginning of Genesis that it is not good for humans to be alone. Truly, Jacob is not alone–while his companion is a source of strife, initially, eventually they are a source of blessing. So often that is true with us as well. May we recognize the power of caring–and being cared for by–others. And may we act in such a way so that the people we love know that they are really not alone, and help one another get out of whatever hole we’re in, together.
